OK.... i've not been in here before. He's my little moan ...

This weekend i had 3 shoots booked. Today, one by one, the shoots were cancelled.

-Model 1: I've got a virus
-Model 2: I got punched on the nose on wednesday and the swelling hasn't gone down yet
-Model 3: I was getting the photos for my fiance for his birthday but he said he'd prefer something else instead

The last one really made me laugh...

What is it with all these excuses? I think i'll spend some time on my website writing some text about making a deposit to confirm a booking...

I wish the subjects I photograph would at least try to make an appointment. Most of the time they cancel without even informing me they are doing it.

Duane, thanks for the smile. Your pay scale for models is so low, I'll bet they just want to "give you the bird!"

Peter, what a peculiar congruence that all three appointments would cancel on the same weekend. The "I've got a virus" is the only one that makes sense to me. If the others are legit, I'll bet there's a doozy of a story behind them.

Do you get a partial non-refundable payment in advance of your shoots? If not, you might want to implement that into future fee schedules.

Anyhow, sorry to hear this. Bummer.

well that sucks- but I do want to know the story behind being punched in the nose. :)

I would do the booking deposit. if people have no investment they are far more likely to cancel. I work in health care and can give you some stories about cancelling- all because my services are covered by the government. :?

I too would like to know what happened for #2. I bet that's an interesting story!

I think the nose story is the real one as I've shot her before and it's just too bizarre to make that up. It makes me worry a little... i'll find out when i see her next.

The previous week i had 3 shoots booked and two cancelled at last minute:
- I crashed my car and need the money to have it repaired
- the outfit I ordered hasn't arrived yet.

The week before that one just didn't show up at all. This shoot i was doing for free as it was an idea i had, and had booked a make-up-artist for it. I realised I didn't have her mobile number so emailed her. She replied:

- so sorry but my friend and i had an accident on friday night and i only just got my phone back, which is why i couldn't contact you. I will understand if you don't want to do the shoot now.

I replied to say, sure, let's go ahead with the shoot still, but she didn't get back to me. I still paid the Make-up artist as she turned up...

So, in the last 3 weeks I've had 7 shoots booked and only 1 of them went ahead.

I'll be putting some text on my website this weekend about taking deposits :) I didn't want to make my business 'businesslike' but i can see how things are going...

Wow!

I can't believe I read the words "peculiar congruence" in a photography forum!

That was kind of refreshing. Maybe not worth posting but it struck me as a peculiar congruence!

Bakeys - that utterance came from someone who was a writer long before she picked up a camera :)

Peter, I think Bambi's succinctness aptly portrayed the situation - "that sucks". Bad enough about the lost income but when you incur out of pocket expenses like the MUA, I think that particular client should reimburse you.

I know you do a lot of free stuff but, IMO, you need some paying shoots to cover expenses so you literally can afford to do free stuff.

I agree that a financial commitment is essential to assure non-cancellation. Perhaps the old line is appropos "Why do my clients cancel at the last minute?" "Because they can!" :D

Bakeys and Larry, now don't y'all two go makin' fun of this southerner. I'll bet you pigs to polecats that "peculiar congruence" was on the tip of everyone's tongue who responded to this string. I just beat them all to it! Image

That would be extremely frustrating.
I'm guessing if #3 was a legitimate excuse- that girl probably isn't the happiest right now either.
