The rules are normally quite simple - if you miss a corner, run over the the chicane or whatever, you cannot gain an advantage. Pass anyone this way and you've got to let them back past, or you get a penalty.

With 3 laps to go, Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) tried to pass Kimi Raikonnen (Ferrari) into the final chicane. Kimi resisted, pushed him wide (you're not technically allowed to run another car off the track but it's not enforced, particularly under these sort of circumstances) so Lewis had to cut the chicane. He emerged in front, slowed down, fell in behind Raikonnen's car and duly passed him into the next corner. It had just started spitting with rain and, on the next lap, Kimi spun and crashed into a wall.

Lewis has now been given a 25 second penalty, dropping him to third and reducing an 8 point championship lead to 2 points. McLaren are appealing the penalty but there is _one_ team who have ever successfully overturned a decision

For reference, these are the same stewards who, in 2006, permitted Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) to completely straight-line a chicane on 3 consecutive laps to avoid being passed and who penalised Fernando Alonso (Renault) for impeding Felipe Massa (Ferrari) when he was a few hundred metres in front of him. Among other decisions and rule clarifications Ferrari were pleased with.

I love big, fast, spectacular single seaters but this is a joke. IRL cars are ugly, oversimple brutes and Tony George is an egomaniac who killed a fantastic series purely to get it all under his control (and handed the market over to even cruder NASCARs that struggle to turn right - fun but they're nothing like proper racing cars). A1GP is far below even IRL standards - and the cars are now all made by Ferrari!

What is a poor race fan to do?

I like cycling but it's not the same! Actually, I think the closest to the thrill for me is track cycling. Watching a team pursuit or madison at full crack is a heck of a spectacle! I'd miss the howl of a racing engine though :-(

Motto Cross?

I don't think there are any rules beyond the start and finish
