Well, my wife talked me into joining a "biggest loser club" at work. 9 of us put in $100.00 each winner take all, the winner being the person who loses the largest percent of their body weight.

I weighed in at 199lb, the smallest male in the group. The other males weigh 227, 256, 470, and I did not get the last guys weight. The females weighed in at 168, 187, and again I did not see the last girl...

I think I have a snowball chance in hell at winning, and my knee is killing me from running 3 miles last night...plus my stomach is empty.

I have eaten 1200 or less calories the past two days, most of which is in the evening for dinner. I have burned at least 3k each day according to the calculator I am using (See "Fitday.com")

So...to get down to 160 I need to burn at least 1800 more calories than I eat till the end on December 1st.

I don't like to diet. I like meat, specifically high fat meat and cheeses...oh and beer

anyway, I think if I can get to 160 I have a chance at the 900.00 else all is lost. I think we will do a 1/2 way point weigh in which should give me an idea of where my competition sits

Kurt,

Forget the money. Just keep at it, because ultimately, you will be a winner no matter what. If you were to win the money, that would just be the icing on the cake you won't even want any more.

I just got through watching the program, because I always find it inspiring to see how hard everyone works. Felt really bad for that couple who got sent home, but they now look amazing!!

Good luck in reaching that goal by Dec. 1..

Anne, there is only one winner in every contest...the rest are runners up

But your right, if I do lose some weight under this little game as incentive it would be worth the $100.00 paid.

I like fat people. They make me feel slim.

I like dumb people. They make me feel smart.

I like ugly people. They make me feel handsome.

I like "aromatic" people. They make me feel clean.

If you gained the weight because of "binge" eating of sweets (a pint of Hagen Daz, for instance), then try eliminating all high glycemic foods from your diet. (Google "Glycemic Index" to get a list of foods, both high and low.)

I participated in one of this office weight loss contest once a few years ago. In fact I won the contest loosing only 24 lbs. The problem was I went back to my old ways of eating and stopped walking every day like I was during the contest. The 24 lbs came back and remain today. I really need to modify my eating habits in a way that will allow me to stay at my target weight. Our pool was much smaller I think it ended up being $150.

Good luck Kurt.

This dude wins for sure. I mean, it's actually possible for him to lose 100 lbs or hell 270 lbs (maybe not in the allotted time period, but he's got more to work with for sure). You lose too much and you die of starvation ;)

I'm actually trying to get a bit more fit now myself. I'm not rigorous with calorie calculations or anything. My strategy is to eat a bit less (hey, I still like good food, but less is less), and bike at least an hour or two every day. I'm on day #4, and I've ridden between 10 and 35 kilometers each of the last few days. Biking with this as your view helps with the motivation (Dallas rd, which I've biked down quite a bit lately - you can look across the Straight of Juan de Fuca to the olympic mountains in the US&A):

I don't know if biking is the best way to lose weight and get fit (compared with say, running) but I can't run right now. No f'in way. My muscle:weight ratio is too low :)

That's why the "Biggest Loser" is based on a percentage of the total weight lost.

So a 400 pound man that lost 4% would have lost 16 pounds.

But a 200 pound broad that lost 4% would only have to lose 8 pounds to equal the result.

This is not perfectly fair, but much fairer than just going by absolute pounds lost.

Good luck. Check out http://www.fitday.com I have been using it to keep track of calories burned and eaten.

I ran the first day, my knee has been killing me ever since....but have managed to at least walk an hour per day.

Always.

Yesterday I was coaxed into going to the Anchor Bar for lunch with some work friends...

I got a grilled chicken sandwich and a water.

Do you realize how depressing it is to be at the home of Hot Wings and eating a grilled chicken sandwich with a slice of tomato and onion?

I don't normally eat chicken

Mmmm:

My experience with diets is that they are difficult to stay on and easy to go off of.

I recently lost 65 lbs but on a "change of life-style" method. Instead of dieting, I simply select my foods from the list of low glycemic index foods. I never allow myself to be hungry, but rather I eat enough of the low glycemic foods or snack on them.

Admittedly it has taken a long time (11 months) but I have not "fallen off the wagon" in that time, nor do I feel inclined to do so. I think that the "change of life-style" method is likely the only one that will result in long term benefits.

(In my recent physical my cholesterol levels were "excellent" according to my doctor, and my blood pressure was down too.)

Kurt,

Jogging 3 miles per day will not burn off the calories, it is merely superficial minimal aerobic exercise, nice for getting the heart pumping and maintaining fitness. You need some anaerobic buffering dude to put off the quick pounds. That would be the heart pounding , legs burning type of runs. Repeat 500's at 75% MHR (max heart rate) will do it! :) Don't use the old, useless charts to figure your MHR. Run a 300 yard distance all-out, to the point of drop dead and take your pulse. Of course a nice Casio Heart Rate Monitor will work better.

Losing that much by December is quick. Labatt's Lite is the best beer for dieters.....check out the calories and taste ratio, beats everything hands down.

PS. don't use the "miles" for work-outs, you'll get much better results using HR (heart rate)and time. Say a 30 minute run at 134bps instead of 3 miles easy. One more thing...always start your winter runs into the wind! :)

Thanks, ...but do not plan on becoming as hard core about athletics or working out as I used to be...so taking the 'Starve and burn more than I eat" route...

Knees will not take the stress, may simply walk. Not going to do anything the next 4 days due to the knee pain.

Simple math:

Burn 3500 more calories than you eat = lose 1 lb of weight.

I am just doing that for the next 10 weeks...

And no beer, light or otherwise.

I am currently 2000 calories (deficeit) ahead of schedule.

Don't think I have ever had a blizzard, but do enjoy milk shakes...

Come December first ...or one of my cheat days (to be determined by how far ahead I get on weight loss)

191 yesterday.

Not bad considering beer in Detroit last weekend along with a lot of unhealthy food and no exercise at all for about 9 days...

187

12 lbs (6%) down...

Did cheat a bit this weekend, beer and wine at a party and have another next weekend. I think as long as I am good during the week a night on the weekends won't do me in.

You're lighter than me now. I was 191 this morning. Have only lost about 3 pounds since I started running. That surprises me since yesterday's run alone burned 2065 calories. I guess I've just been eating more. I must be taller than you though (6'-2") because I don't think I'd want to weigh any less than 185.

Any idea how your competition is doing?

Wayne Gretzky was on local sports radio on Friday morning (Phoenix was in town for a game that evening). He said that he was trying to lose some weight, so Thursday night, the players sent a tray of desserts to his room.

Steve, you really must be running far to burn that many calories...

The next best competition that showed up to the optional weigh in was 3% ...however the person who was in the lead was not available to weigh in.

I lost nothing since last Friday...too much beer/wine this weekend.
