My laptop, visibly on its last legs for a little while (and which I'd been trying to replace) died yesterday. The screen image suddenly corrupted in the middle of some work. I'd thought it was the screen (which I could see had problems), but no - an external monitor made no difference. Looks like the graphics card has blown.

Most of the data is on an external hard disk (including the photos), but there's enough on it that I'm none too happy. So, the job of buying a new laptop (finding one without shared memory graphics is a good game!) now has added the job of getting the hard disk out of the old one and into an enclosure to pull the data off...

So, the new machine is now needed urgently - this is being posted from a pool machine I happen to have at home. Wish me luck!

That bites.

One thing you may try, that I did was start the laptop in safe mode. That actually gave me enough of a picture to wipe the drive 3x over before selling it.

Good luck with your search.

Bummer about the video card.

I had a similar issue two weeks ago. The memory went on the graphics card, but everything else is OK. Luckily I can still boot into it as long as I stick to standard VGA (800x600), so I can access everything and still use it as portable storage effectively. But I need to go looking for a new laptop.

I ordered one from Dell the day my other one died, but they still havent delivered and are constantly pushing out the estimated delivery date  So today I cancelled the order and the search starts again.

My Osborne 1 just bit the dust too.

You can't even get WordStar anymore. I'm going to have to learn how to use a new program.
