I've been through a year of hell with vehicles. It started with my wife's car. Had to replace all the valve stem seals, timing chain, water pump, and other misc. crap. We were down to just my car for about a full month. The last week of just having my car, the radiator sprung a leak while she was driving it and it overheated... So we had no transportation. Luckily I was able to get her car back running. Because mine overheated, I had to then replace the head gasket, oil seals, and other misc parts that don't do well when it gets really hot... After doing all that, I started getting water in my oil. So I figured when it overheated it must have cracked the block or warped the head. So I found a used engine to put in it. I did that about 2 months ago... Yesterday in the parking lot, i think the timing belt slipped and took out the valves. So now we are back to 1 car (keep in mind, I work 50 miles away from home). I have no idea what I'm going to do.....

I agree cars suck. I don't have the problems you do but the list of repairs on my Jeep are long and expensive.

I just had the motor rebuilt. but I need to replace the soft top cut out and replace rusted floor boards. replace the rubber spacers on the springs. I just had the drive u-joints replaced seems like the last time I did it I did it wrong so they didn't last. and I have something else in the drive line that is grumbling.

My wifes van is running fine but I know it is only a matter of time before something goes haywire on it. Maybe I need two horses I wonder if they would be okay grazing at the park and ride all day?

LOL I should look into horses. I'd save a ton on gas. Would take me longer to get to work though.

My dad once told me that you will always be making "car payments" even if you have your car paid off cause you're either saving to get another one or spending money to keep the existing one running.

Sorry you guys are having so much trouble. (Glad I have a warranty on mine.)

I'm actually waiting to hear about an impound vehicle. It's a 2003 Nissan Xterra with a broken timing chain. All I have to do is get a new chain, tensioner, and exhaust valves. The yard might just scrap it out and if they do I have the option to buy it from them before they do. $400. Body is in excellent shape and the interior is like new.

Not sure I like the 19 MPG freeway mileage though. I've been driving a car that gets 28 for the last 3 years....

So true, three days after we finished paying off our car, the battery died, then a couple days later the brakes went... just wanted to cry... (of course the refrigerator, garage door, and AC all broke that week too... :(

Well Aaron, sounds like you're doing all the mechanical work yourself so you must be saving loads of money that way?
Our petrol has just gone up to NZ$2.25 per litre, so I reckon you US people are very lucky lol!!

If my calculations are correct (Big If there), that means that Mia's gas is about $7.14/gal US. I'm in Oklahoma and it's $3.28/gal. Guess I should quit griping, huh? (A liter is 1.057 quarts... or 1 liter=.264 gallons)

Wow! At $7.14 a gallon I'd start seriously thinking about getting a scooter!!! (even though my car gets 33 mpg on the road).

Got the motorcycle out last night. Have to fix some lights, get a new rear tire, and give it an oil change. Gonna be cold for a another few weeks, but hopefully it will warm up quick around here.

I have a feeling it's going to be a long summer.

Yes Doc, your calculations look pretty right to me. It's said here though that we are steadily climbing up
towards NZ3 per litre this year.... That will be close to US$9 per gallon here soon.... Furthermore public transport
systems here are close to non existent, so everybody has to drive their own car pretty much...
I also think the median income is a lot lower here than in the US..

We all complain about the price of gas here ($1.13 per litre), but we can go to a store and pay $5.00 for a gallon of orange juice.
So there is 3.78 litres to a US gallon which equals $4.27 per gallon.
So it's still cheaper for me to drink gasoline.

I'm not even going to talk about alcohol, gas is still cheaper......
