My #1 will be the winning run in the Michigan high school baseball championship game the second week of June. For those who follow the sport; the player scored from 1st base on a two base hit from the batter. For those who don't know the game..he ran a long way, very fast and got lucky!

Image

Not a submission, this is the player that hit the double (two base hit). He was very happy!

This obviously old shot of Scott Eyre pitching came to mind so I dug it up.

Funny, at the time I thought this one was pretty good. :) Not sure what I was thinking re the purple sepia tone. Might be worth searching for to see if anything can be done with it 5 years later.

okay here's the shot I took for this challenge. I was in Halifax on sunday walking around with my daughter and we heard a commotion. There was some sort of sports event going on. I had to stay back behind the barricades because we didn't pay to enter. :)

Nice catch of that hoop shot, Bambi. Plus the light and shadows worked out well.

thanks. I'm just pleased I took a shot specifically for a challenge rather then go through my archives :)

Just popped in to say WOW WOW WOW. I'll reserve my full ruminations until the end, but just to say the bar has been raised high!

We are about midway through the challenge. Still time to go out and find adventure (kudos to Bambi for this).

The OP cannot be held responsible for any injury, psychological trauma, or death as a result of participating in this challenge.

How time flies when you are having fun! Ok, I'm not too sure how I'm going to do this but I have to pick a favourite. Here goes, wish me luck:

Bambi, excellent job of jumping right in there. This is pin sharp and freezes the action brilliantly. It suggests a "playful" theme rather than full on action, but I like it nonetheless.

Phil, what a truly great shot. I can almost smell the testosterone and the fast shutter speed captures all the detail and high drama.

You then go and post a picture straight out of TopGun (is that a Tom-Cat also?). I can't look at this without "Highway to the Danger Zone" ringing through my head. To top it all off you capture the precise moment the fighter hits the sound barrier! I can feel the adrenaline rushing and then...

Walter, I'm not sure a fishing trip really captures the action element of this challenge ;) Just kidding of course, I can almost get a sense of the speed in the last picture. I don't think the two in the first image look particularly stressed though. I do really like the 'look and feel' of this series. The lighting is beautiful and the solar flares on the last picture give it that lovely retro vibe.

Larry, picking up the pace again I see with two speeding cars. And they have flames shooting out of them! Great panning technique.

Greg, a bit of old skool action eh? I don't know who Scott Eyre is, but if he's a fast bowler (sorry, pitcher) then you did well to get the ball in frame. Still I'm not sure the image screams "action" at me, a bit more of a nice Sunday afternoon throw about..

Bambi, top marks for going out into the world and seeking some action. You've caught this one just at the right time, there are some heavy shadows but the face is well lit. I think the background, unfortunately, is a bit fussy, and not sure if you could have positioned yourself better to improve this (without a ticket at any rate).

Scott, another sports shot. I think you did well to actually capture the guys doing something other than standing around waiting to get everyone lined up correctly (which is what they always seem to be doing whenever I have been channel hopping a caught a few minutes of late night American football). It's a bit too blurred for my tastes, so a faster shutter speed would have benefited here I think. Also, it would have been nice to be able to see where the ball is (and therefore what they are all fighting over). Still, the chap about to have his head stamped on is a nice touch.

The boat pic really does give the impression of speed. Again I think there is a bit too much blur, so I feel a faster shutter was needed. Now this goes completely against what i am about to say for the horse picture, which is my favourite of your entries.

Excellent use of a slow shutter speed to create an impressionistic image of galloping horses. I can't tell if they have riders or what environment they are in (beach sunset scene maybe?), but I really like this one.

Dwayne, another good sports shot. This time the description gives away the importance of the moment and adds to the intensity. You can see that the stealer has one goal at that moment, and that is to get that ball. Another sepia shot, which I wasn't expecting to see in this challenge, but it works well.

Patrish, just when I thought I couldn't take any more excitement you pop in with someone doing a back flip on a jet ski! Not only that but he's doing it in a huge shower of water and I love the way all the droplets are frozen mid air.

You then follow it up with a picture of an ice-cream maker? I mean, it IS nice, and i can see the motion blur in there, but I wouldn't call it thrilling exactly. Still, I am a big fan of ice-cream and having one would be a nice way of winding down after all that excitement.

i haven't actually managed to decide a winner as yet, but I do have a shortlist of favourites (or rather ones I feel capture the essence of this challenge):

Phil's home run
Larry's flaming cars
Bambi's jump shot
Patrish's jet ski

Ok I need to pick one.. I'm going to go with Bambi's jump shot. I was finding it hard to make a final decision and I did mention going out to seek the action would grant you bonus points, and that has tipped it in your favour. You captured him at the peak of his jump and managed to keep him there for all eternity. I particularly like the vivid colours in this one. Good job!

Aww.. thanks you lot ;) One thing I did forget whilst I was rambling was to thank everyone for their submissions. I really enjoyed them all. Hopefully I'll get time to join Bambi's "derelict" challenge. I've had a look through my archives and haven't found anything suitable yet, and unfortunately I have work commitments for the next few days so won't be able to get out and about. I hope I'll be able to get something in quickly at the tail end of the week.

Thanks again, hope you all enjoyed the challenge as much as I did!

Nice stuff here. My personal favourite is Scott's horses, but all are well done. Mine wasn't a very good action set and I didn't expect any accolades for it. There was plenty of action that weekend but the camera was stowed away during it so this was just some casual shooting during slack time.
