The subject for Challenge 114 is Autumn (or "The Fall" :))

I'll judge the entries Sat 19th Nov in the evening (my evening, which is GMT!)

Hope you all have fun!
As many entries as you like, from as far back as you like, just let me know which you'd like judged please. Failure to tell me will result in your last image posted being judged :)

Cheers
Jamie

Here's a few starters :-

Hmmm, you're about 1 month too late for me to produce something new for this challenge. I'll have to dig through the archives.

I want to toss my hat into the ring!

I took this one in 2008 and it's one of my favorites. However, I'm still not happy with the way the sky turned out.

Image

I went back in 2010 and took this one. The area around the barn changed a bit ...

Image

I kinda like this one, too! I took this in 2010, as well.
Image

This is the one I'd like judged. This too, was taken in 2010.

Image

Thanks for looking! Do you have a favorite one?

This shrub in our garden produces these amazing colours every Autumn. I've shot macros of the leaves in the past, but this year I thought I'd try an overview:

Image

I can't resist posting a close-up too:

Both shots taken today (November 10th) BTW.

I think I will enter this one for now and hope for a little time to shoot this weekend before all the leaves fall out of the trees.

We don't have fall at the beach, so I looked at this contest in dismay. I spent half a day trying to get a shot for Mike's "long exposure" last month which left me in a deep depression because I failed miserably and had nothing to post.

But after thinking about it, I brightened up. I decided that "autumn" is nothing more than a state of mind. My beach has its own seasons of ebb and flow. By the end of August, the tourists have gone home. We still have the golfers, of course, but they are more interested in, well, golfing and eating, than in the beach. In "autumn" we locals reclaim our beach. The boats are back in the marinas before sunset. We walk the shore without the crowds of summer. We enjoy the sunsets without being elbow to elbow with the tourists. In short, "autumn" is our favorite season. I miss the Blue Ridge Mountains of my home in Virginia, but I wouldn't trade my autumn at the beach.

I haven't shot much this year for pleasure - really need to start doing that again. A lot of great entries already. Patrish..I like how you think outside the box and define autumn your own way. Kudos for that. :)

Signs of autumn at the beach:
In addition to the lack of tourists, autumn seems to be the only time of the year when we see mounds of foam on the beach.
It's a very different look than summer, when this same point of view would show blanket to blanket people basking in the sun.

Thought this was a diverse representation of Autumn colors. After seeing all these great posts I was nearly intimidated into not posting. But Patrish gave me the boost.

And now for something a bit different. While the fall is certainly pretty for many of us it also brings back memories of lost buddies. So this is my autumn photograph. Taken with a Linhof Tech IV, Efke PL 100 film and souped in PyroCat HD. Printed on Agfa RC. This is a scan of the 8x10 print.

Hi all, i've written some of my thoughts down as I was judging. I do hope I dont offend, I just wanted to explain my reasoning behind my decisions. Please take it with a pinch of salt, i'm just an amateur, but I always appreciate feedback on my images and find that it's the best way of learning to improve!!

Cablechick
The light on the trees and the barn is superb. Liking the little gravel road leading the eye into the shot too. Quite of lot of dead space in the upper right 2/3rds of the shot though.

PaulT
Great autumn colours, good light and focus, although my eye has trouble finding somewhere to settle

Eastsider
Well composed picture, nice tones of blue vs orange. Picturesque location indeed!

Scotthadl

Loving the colours in this shot, the blue and red combination works really well. Dare I say the focus looks a tiny bit off?

Patrish

Great sunset scene (or sunrise?) Haloing around the trees to the right. Bit dark to the right, but I do really like this scene. Maybe a bit more of the shack and less of the tree on the right?

I didnt realise you'd entered another, so here's another review :). The wide angle instantly shows how expansive this beach is, for me, the foam is interesting (although not particularly attractive imho). I do like the figures to the left, they give a sense of scale to the image. I think this would work better as a panorama, removing a good chunk of fairly featureless sky. You could also consider adding a graduated filter in lightroom to add some more interest to it?

Easypickings
Good framing using the autumnal tree. Leading lines from the track point the eye where it should go (to the lighthouse). Very interesting sky too. Lighting could be better (on the tree's leaves) but that's just what you've been dealt.

TimmyG
Great action shot of the dog with an Autumn background.
It's a little bit blurred (seems to be motion blur) and I wonder if the levels could do with a tiniest tweak maybe?

Bambi
The colour in the trees is superb Bambi, but they're cut off at the tops in favour of showing off the pool at the bottom of the shot. I would've perhaps angled to get the trees into the picture instead, leaving a little bit of pool at the bottom. I also might've considered a slower shutter to blur the falls a little bit but this is often just a personal preference, you love it or hate it I find.
(I really adore the etched leaves shot btw!)

Buddybob
Nice reflections, the tree and branch frames the image well and draws my eye across nicely. The top 1/4 of the image isnt working for me however. I do like the fact that I keep finding new things to look at in the image though, I've just found the stream bed underneath the branch. very nice!

Mia
A very striking image, the light on the tree is sublime, the sky is interesting too. Is that the sea on the horizon?
The frame is good and the keyline picks out the dominant colours of the scene. I find the whole scene to be somewhat surreal really (not a bad thing)

Eric
Fall has a double meaning for this photograph for me. Brings on strong feelings of what these people went through for us.

Commended
- Cablechick - Barn
- Easypickings - Lighthouse
- Patrish (for the sunset scene, although not strictly your entered image!)

Winner
Miadelight - Just loving it, and not entirely sure why :)

Thanks to everyone for entering and hope you all had fun. Sorry about the delay in judging!

Doh! For some reason, I thought I had one more day for this. Oh well, mine wouldn't have done well among this selection of images anyway.

Well done Mia, it would have been my choice too.
