usually I have to wrack my brain for an idea but this time I had 3 pop into my head. This is the one I chose:
According to Wikipedia: "An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject's usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject's life and surroundings. " For this challenge this is the def'n we are using.

Some examples:

from my pre SLR days:

Rules:
1. choose 3 photos
2. photos can be taken in any time frame but bonus points if taken for the challenge
3. challenge ends midnightSaturday, May 5th.

Love the theme of this challenge, so I thought I'd better not waste any time and get cracking. Unfortunately, it's late, and I'm the only one around (apart from the cat) so I've shot an environmental SELF portrait. This is probably how I can be found most evenings, trying to correct all my photography mistakes in photoshop. In fact, this is exactly how I looked when I read your post:

You can see I've shaved my face and arms in this. I had to try and pass myself off as human this week...

Here is George. He calls himself the King of Calgary. I met him in the Kalamata Grocery store. It's a local Greek super market. He also told me that when he is not presiding over his kingdom he changes his robes to what is appropriate for a Member of the Bar.

HI Everyone,
thanks so much for participating. I loved all of the entries.
TimmyG- nice to meet you. I really like the story that this one tells. I love the shot of the guy cooking. he's perfectly focused on what he's doing which makes the shot for me.

Matthew- All really interesting individuals. you have enough of the background to tell the story but there's a sense of mystery as well. Of all 3 I really like the crystal ball shot. I'm not sure I understand it but it's cool.

Patrish- 3 strong shots really showing the people at work. of all 3 I like the watersport director. He has a cool vibe and I like the angle that you took the shot.

Eastsider- great entries, but that girl catching the ball- perfect focus and timing. Even though she's looking right at the camera we know she's paying no attention to you- she's focused on the ball!

Eric- George is terrific. Such a lovely and natural way with the camera.

this was a hard choice because each one of the shots captures the theme. However, a decision must be made so I pick
Eastsider's 'The Catcher'. I love the timing, comp, exposure and processing of this shot.

Over to you Phil. :)

Congrats Phil. It's a great shot.

(Phew! Managed to update the page header images using a flaky internet connection from my holiday location in Devon.)
