Later this summer the Olympics comes to our fair isle. Athletes from across the globe will gather in London to prove who is the fastest, strongest and most skilled at a variety of well established sports and games.

2012 also marks the inaugural LightCafe Olympics! Here photographers from across the globe will gather to demonstrate their prowess with a camera, capturing light and shadow in a glorious celebration of creative imagination.

The rules are simple:

Maximum of 3 entries per participant
Images from within the past 12 months (photos taken specifically for the challenge will gain extra credit)
Capture a sport, but it MUST NOT feature in the current official Olympics (to see which sports are NOT allowed click here)

For example, select a well known sport that is not featured in the current Olympic line-up; such as "Rock Climbing:"

Image
Climber by Tim.Garlick, on Flickr

Perhaps there is a local, traditional sport not known internationally, such as "Bride Tossing:"

Image

Or even make up a sport that you would like to see get into the official Olympics, such as "Eating Chips:"

Image
The Swoop by Tim.Garlick, on Flickr

Medals will be awarded based on sporting effort, originality and artistic interpretation; and should be submitted before midnight GMT Saturday 9th June (a little under 2 weeks from now).

Good luck to all you photolympians and have fun!

Well, the choice of subject for me is easy. I participated in one of the biggest local races of the year this last weekend, Swiftsure:

Image

Image

135 nautical miles, near gale winds for awhile, and some pretty big seas. These guys were all strangers to me at the start but it was utterly amazing to go through this with them.

Oh, and in case you will contest that this is a sport in the olympics because it is "sailing", this is a big keel boat long distance race, and they only sail dinghies, skiffs, and boards in the olympics. But if you want to disqualify my entry, you won't get any arguments from me ;)

I will see about a third, creative entry.

I'm loving everyone efforts and achievements so far, and glad so many of you are getting involved.

The LightCafe Olympic Committee have also made a historic ruling and decided that, as we are all having so much fun, they are going to waive the three post limit!! There's approximately 1 week remaining before the closing ceremony so keep the ideas coming.

Indeed, all good things must come to an end, and it's time for the closing ceremony.

The good news is, everyone's sports were completely unique and therefore you all get a gold medal! ;)

Unfortunately only one can carry the torch onto the next challenge, and here is how I have decided who it should be:

Walter, your competitive sailing entry was excellent. I didn't really understand the difference you mentioned between this type of sailing, and the one that currently features in the Olympics, but I enjoyed your pictures and that's enough for you not to be disqualified ;)

Of the 2 images, the first is my favourite (although I like the team spirit captured in the second). A very calming image, I particularly like the line of light running along the horizon. Definitely a wall-hanger, and a strong competitor.

Phil, I would love to see hot air ballooning in the Olympics! There's something about having such big, bright colours floating through the air whilst the pilots hang beneath in a wicker basket that is inspiring. Good entry and great image. I like the composition with this and how you have filled the frame with colour.

Jedi Light Sabre fencing would surely be a crowd pleaser. Much more exciting than the step back, step forward, thrust rubbish that is modern fencing. I loved the portrait of the Sith lord; suitably intimidating. That was until I noticed the black make-up on his neck being rubbed off by his Sith robes and the illusion was shattered. A slight touch up with Photoshop or equivalent would have maintained the effect (the floating skull is a nice touch though)...

Zombies just don't feature heavily enough in Olympics sports in my opinion, so it is good to see this issue being addressed by your third entry. I would love to see a zombie race of some kind. I'm sure it would be a struggle to keep them all in their lanes, but nothing a few well positioned rifle men could assist with. For some reason it reminded me of this old Monty Python sketch. Rich twits and zombies...very similar I suppose. Another cracker of an image.

Matthew, yes! Skateboarding should definitely feature in the Olympics. I'm amazed at how you managed to get a brilliant landscape shot combined with an awesome action shot. The composition of this one is fantastic, and you have an amazing background there to compliment the young sportsman.

Baby shot-putting made me laugh out loud. But then it made me feel guilty, and I realised this sport would never get past the human rights regulations set by the Lightcafe Olympic committee. Best to keep this as an underground activity I should think ;)

I like the idea of the windmill race. It does look like the athlete is almost hypnotised by the spinning colours, and I worry this may be a bit similar to the zombie racing. Still it's a lovely image and excellent DoF in this.

Bambi. Benchwarming. Benchwarming! Seriously?!? Surely you must realise there is no suitable way of policing this sport effectively. There must be a million ways you could cheat at this particular event as all you need to do is ensure you get your own body temperature up as high as possible before transferring it to the bench. Having a hot curry, wearing copper underpants or purposefully contracting the Ebola virus are just three ways I can think of to achieve this, and I'm sure given time I could think up many more. No, I'm sorry to say it simply wouldn't work... Nice couple though.

Your second entry was much more appropriate though. I can visualise a field of horses, spinning, twirling and forming beautiful patterns all in perfect unison. That would be truly awesome!

Pali lol, I think the idea of an event to "Make the DC traffic look good" is so crazy it's brilliant. First of all, no matter where the Olympics were being hosted, contestants would have to travel to DC in an attempt to make the traffic look good. That in itself is a completely bonkers idea; I love it! I have absolutely no idea how you would judge this event, but I like your images regardless. I like the strong contrasts in the second image, but the hazy sun in the first clinches it for me.

Patrish back to a more realistic proposition and I think this image is amazing. Jet skis could definitely feature in the modern Olympics and you have captured a stunning example to show the action and drama that could be experienced with this sport.

Now, I'm not quite sure what a "Turkey Trot race" is but I'm guessing it could be a result of eating too much curry before the bench-warming event. A good image, but not my favourite of your entries.

I also don't know what Bocce is, but it looks to me like it could be similar to the French Boules. This is a vastly underated game that I would love to see become more popular, and it earns a well deserved place in our Olympics.

Your final image is terrific. If we were to have a nose-ball holding event it would have to be with dogs! I love his expression in this. Really funny and another image that made me lol.

Aaron I adore this image. I love the colour tones, the frozen action, the great pyramidal composition of the players. I saw this and immediately thought of the famous image Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. Obviously the story behind it isn't the same but I get a clear sense of teams striving to reach their goal from both images. Fantastic work!

Paul, paragliding would be another excellent event. I think I'd have to put a slight twist on it and have the para-gliders leap from Phil's Balloons to make it truly special. Both these images are really great, and they complement each other very well. I hope you have them printed off and hanging beside each other in your front room.

Thunder a very late entry but a classic. Good to see you are involving the animals again, and what a perfect creature to participate in this sport. This created an very clear image in my head of the log rolling back and forth as the turtle's struggled to maintain their balance and knock their competitor into the water. This made me chuckle. A great find!

Well that brings the events and feedback to a close. I suppose I'd better choose a winner (but if you have managed to read through all that drivel and make it this far, you are already a winner in my eyes):

Bronze medal goes to Matt and his amazing skateboarder.

Silver goes to Aaron and that classic football image.

Gold goes to Patrish and her frozen, mid-air, acrobatic, jet-ski stunt man pic!

Thanks everyone for participating. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Congrats Patrish! It's over to you...
