Ok very simple challenge this one. Post your pictures that feature "smoke" in some way. Maybe you have done some abstract smoke art. Maybe you have a landscape with some chimneys smoking in the distance. Maybe you have some people portraits where they are smoking on the street. Just post anything that features smoke in some way.

Image
Young Man Smoking by Tim.Garlick, on Flickr

Standard rules. Up to 3 images each (ok you can post more but I'll only consider the 3 latest images, or the ones you specify)

Lets take 2 weeks for this one, so deadline will be 2nd March (00:00 GMT) or probably more likely, any time before I post the results :)

Extra credit for getting out and finding something smokey within this time frame. Good luck everyone!

This sight outside my office once attracted the laughter of a few local kids as they rode past on their bikes.

Baldwin Locomotive #15. This is actually a mural that covered the wall of a room containing locomotive displays at Brookgreen Gardens in December.

Oops.. Looks like I got my dates a bit wrong (February is too short a month by far), so I think I'll extend the deadline on this one to next weekend.

Phil, I'd love to see some more air show pics if you have them, and Laz, hope you can find something to participate.

Patrish, sorry but I can't let a photo of a photo win this one! Hopefully you can dig up something else, although I do appreciate you finding a very smokey scene and taking part :)

Good luck everyone!

Quote Timmy:
"....sorry but I can't let a photo of a photo win this one..."

Sigh. OK, back to the drawing board. :D Here are my shots from the Flying Circus Air Show in Bealton, Va

1. A small plane drops smoke bombs (as seen here) hoping to destroy Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen
(May 2, 1892 – April 21, 1918) who was widely known as the Red Baron. This scene also involved Snoopy as the pilot,
but you will have to use your imagination, since you can't see him in this photo.

Image

2. Snoopy realizes that he missed the Red Baron when he sees smoke arising from the outhouse below.
(This is where the smoke comes in!)

Image

3. But in the end, Snoopy discovers that the Red Baron is more friend than foe, and together they fly off to look for more
fires that they put out with a large hose in their plane. (Again, use your imagination.)

Image

THE END

(Better?)

Sorry I haven't got anything for this challenge.

Timmy - I'm going away for a week from next Monday, so Sunday evening UK time would be the last chance for me to update the page headers with the winner's photo.

Ok, times up and I have decided on a winner!

Thanks all who entered here are a few mentions of my favourites:

Walter, I really like your documentary style shot. It really is reflective of the times and current attitudes towards smoking. It tells a story which I like, and this was a close second.

Patrish, your second attempt was much better than the first. The third image featuring snoopy was my favourite, and although the series was very apt for the challenge, I struggled to find the connection with smoke in that image on it's own.

Which brings us to the winner. John I really liked all your photos, and they all could be potential winners. The third I decided was the most appropriate with that great plume of smoke sweeping across the frame and leading towards the biplane and stunt performer looping off into the distance. A brilliant image in it's own right, but particularly suited for the current challenge. Well done!

Unfortunately that means you have to pick another topic for the next challenge so soon after you won a previous one :)

Paul, hope you get chance to update the banner image for us and I hope you enjoy your holidays! Are you off anywhere nice?

Thanks for choosing my shot Tim and thanks to everyone else for the comments.

I am now wondering, with no comments on the site since Sunday and little or no activity, if it's really worth the effort to organise Challenge #143.
I'm happy to do it but if there's no interest, what's the point.

Where have all the people gone.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. We only had three people (who i lovingly refer to as "The Hardcore") enter this last challenge.

For myself I've been busy with my 365, which leaves less time for forums, but I still check here regularly and like to comment on people's postings. It has been very quiet for almost a year now. I think we need some plans to revitalise this forum, it would be a real shame to see it die off completely.

I know Mike did a lot of work around creating a newsletter to stir up interest, but that obviously wasn't as successful as hoped. I think we need some kind of recruitment drive to bring in flesh blood but would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts...

Yes, Timmy, I'm one of the hardcore. LOL! I try to participate even when I don't have anything to contribute (like your last challenge, when I was grasping at straws to come up with something.)

John, thanks for bringing this out in the open. Last October I mentioned the same problem in the Mod room, and at that time it was decided to continue with the challenges.

The problem is not just the challenges, but the lack of participation throughout the forum. If you look back over time, you will see lots of names familiar to you....Dwayne, Duane, Kate, Sparkie, Bambi, Thunder, and many others. They came here, posted a few times, but didn't get the response they hoped for. And they moved on.

I'm hoping Phil or some of the other who have been affiliated with this forum much longer than I have will jump in here with ideas/suggestions.

I'm not hardcore, I come and go. Since we all left the other place I've tried lots of forums but I cannot find a decent place to settle, I even went back for awhile. I've made lots of good friends in forums but they are now scattered around.

That man from Tennessee has a lot to answer for. :(

Congrats John. I'm in Madeira and only just managed to find an Internet connection ... don't want to try a header update as I may lose this connection at any time ... will do it Tuesday when I'm home.
